About the treatment

Strength and shape for a damaged tooth

A crown is a cap placed over a tooth to strengthen it or improve how it looks. It can protect a weak tooth from breaking, replace a large filling, protect a tooth after root canal treatment, hold a bridge, or cover a poorly shaped or discoloured tooth.

Crowns are usually made of ceramic, porcelain, or porcelain bonded to metal, chosen according to why you need the crown and where the tooth is.

Why patients choose it

  • Colour-matchedThe shade of the teeth either side is noted so your crown blends in.
  • Your approval firstThe crown is fixed permanently only once you are happy with its colour, shape and fit.
  • ComfortableDone under local anaesthetic, with no more discomfort than a filling.
  • Long-lastingWith good care a crown lasts many years, 5 to 15 on average.

Two visits

How a crown is fitted

  1. First visit

The tooth is prepared, impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is fitted.

  2. Second visit

The temporary is removed and your permanent crown is checked with you, then fixed with a long-lasting dental adhesive.

How many visits does it take?

Normally two: one to prepare the tooth and fit a temporary crown, and one to fit the permanent crown.
