Gum treatment
Healthy gums hold a healthy smile
Bleeding or swollen gums are an early sign. Treated early, gum disease can usually be reversed.
About the treatment
Gum disease is common, and treatable
A build-up of tartar and bacteria inflames the gums, making them red, swollen and quick to bleed. This early stage, gingivitis, can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and good daily care.
Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis: the gums pull away from the teeth and form infected pockets, and the bone and tissue that hold the teeth are slowly lost.
Signs to look out for
- Bleeding gumsEspecially when brushing or flossing.
- Receding gumsTeeth look longer, or roots become visible.
- Bad breathPersistent bad breath despite brushing.
- Loose or drifting teethNew spaces between teeth, or teeth that move.

Who is more likely to get gum disease?
Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors. Hormonal changes, diabetes, some illnesses and medicines that reduce saliva, and genetics can also make gums more vulnerable.
Can gum disease be reversed?
Gingivitis, the early stage, can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and good daily care. Periodontitis can be controlled with deep cleaning and regular maintenance.
